Terms of Service
Last updated October 10, 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and Stupidchess (“we”, “us”) for using the Stupidchess website and game (the “service”). By creating an account or playing, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the service.
Who can use Stupidchess
You must be at least 13 years old to use the service. If you’re under 18, you need a parent or guardian’s permission, and they agree to these terms on your behalf.
Your account
- You can play as a guest without an account. A guest’s games are tied to the browser they were played on, and are lost if that browser’s data is cleared.
- If you create an account, give us an email address you control and keep your password to yourself. You’re responsible for what happens under your account.
- Pick a username that doesn’t impersonate anyone, infringe anyone’s rights, or include anything offensive or hateful. We may change or reclaim a username that does.
- You can delete your account at any time in Settings, or ask us to by emailing hello@stupidchess.com.
Playing fair
When you use Stupidchess, you agree not to:
- Harass, threaten or abuse other players.
- Exploit bugs to gain an advantage, or access games, accounts or data that aren’t yours.
- Interfere with the service, for example by overloading it, probing it for vulnerabilities without permission, or getting around its security or rate limits.
- Use bots, scripts or scrapers to access the service in bulk.
- Use the service for anything illegal.
If you find a security problem, please tell us at hello@stupidchess.com instead of using it.
Our content
Stupidchess, including its cards, card text and artwork, design, software and name, belongs to us. You may use the service and print the cards it offers for your own personal, non-commercial play. You may not copy, sell or redistribute them, or build a competing product from them, without our permission. Chess itself belongs to everyone.
Your content
You keep ownership of anything you create on Stupidchess, such as your username and deck names. You give us permission to store it, and to display it to you and to other players as part of running the service.
Memberships
Playing Stupidchess is free. A membership adds extra features. The plans, what each one includes and their prices are on the Membership page, and you’ll see the price, including any tax, again before you pay. Stripe handles payments for us. If you’re under 18, you need a parent or guardian’s permission to buy one.
- Free trial. Every new account gets a membership free for its first 7 days. You don’t give us a card for it, so nothing is charged when it ends: it just ends.
- Automatic renewal. A membership is billed monthly or yearly, as you choose, and renews automatically at the end of each period, charged to the payment method you gave, until you cancel.
- Cancelling. You can cancel at any time with Manage membership, on the Membership page or in Settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep your membership until the end of the period you’ve already paid for.
- Changing plans. You can switch to another plan at any time. The difference for the rest of the current period is charged or credited to you.
- Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, it’s retried for a while and you keep your membership meanwhile. If it still can’t be collected, the membership ends.
- Price changes. If a plan’s price changes, we’ll email you at least 30 days before you’re first charged the new price, which only applies from your next renewal. A yearly membership keeps its price until it renews. You can cancel before then if you don’t want to continue.
- Shared plans. Some plans cover other accounts as well as the buyer’s. The buyer invites them by username and pays for everyone; nobody else is charged. Accounts on a shared plan get its features only while the buyer’s membership lasts. The buyer can remove anyone, and anyone can leave.
- Complimentary memberships. We sometimes give a membership away. We can end one we’ve given at any time.
- What a plan includes. We may add to what a plan includes. If we take away something meaningful, we’ll tell you before it happens, and you can cancel.
- A membership belongs to the account that bought it and can’t be transferred or sold.
Refunds
We don’t give refunds for the part of a period you’ve already started, with two exceptions:
- Within 14 days. If you ask within 14 days of your first payment for a membership, or of a yearly renewal, we’ll refund that payment in full and end the membership.
- Mistakes. If you were charged twice, charged after cancelling, or charged in error some other way, we’ll put it right.
To ask for a refund, email hello@stupidchess.com from the address on your account. Refunds go back to the payment method you paid with. Nothing here takes away a right to a refund you have under the law where you live.
Changes to the service
Stupidchess is under active development. We may add, change or remove features, cards and rules, and we may suspend or stop the service. We’ll try to give notice of anything major, but we can’t promise it will always be available.
Ending your use
You can stop using Stupidchess at any time. If you ask us to delete your account, we’ll cancel your membership too. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts other players or the service at risk. The sections on our content, disclaimers and limits of liability continue to apply after that.
Disclaimers
The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that game results and history will never be lost. Some places don’t allow these warranties to be excluded, so some of this may not apply to you.
Limits of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Stupidchess isn’t liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost data, arising from your use of the service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or US $50, whichever is greater. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. When we do, we’ll update the date at the top of this page, and we’ll tell you about meaningful changes on the site or by email before they take effect. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the updated terms.
